Lung Function Testing

Comprehensive Respiratory Assessment

Lung function testing, or spirometry, measures how well your lungs work by assessing the volume of air you can inhale and exhale, and how quickly you can expel air. These measurements provide essential information for diagnosing and monitoring respiratory conditions.

The Testing Process

You’ll breathe through a mouthpiece connected to a spirometer whilst performing various breathing manoeuvres. The test involves taking deep breaths and forcefully exhaling, as well as breathing normally. The entire assessment typically takes 15-20 minutes and requires no sedation or invasive procedures.

Clinical Applications

Lung function testing evaluates:
– Unexplained breathlessness or chronic cough
– Asthma diagnosis and management
– Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
– Pre-operative assessment for major surgery
– Occupational lung disease screening
– Response to respiratory medications
– Monitoring chronic respiratory conditions

Understanding Your Results

The test measures several key parameters:
– Forced vital capacity (FVC): Total air you can forcefully exhale
– Forced expiratory volume (FEV1): Air expelled in the first second
– Peak expiratory flow: Maximum speed of exhalation
– FEV1/FVC ratio: Indicates obstructive or restrictive patterns

Integrated Gastroenterology Assessment

Whilst primarily a respiratory test, lung function assessment proves valuable in gastroenterology for evaluating patients with gastro-oesophageal reflux-related respiratory symptoms, assessing surgical fitness, and investigating unexplained respiratory complaints that may have digestive origins.

Easy & Hassle-Free Process

What to Expect on your Consult

Step 1

Medical History & Symptom Review

Dr Chopdat will discuss your symptoms in detail, review your medical history, current medications, and family history of digestive disorders.

Step 2

Physical Examination

A focused physical exam including abdominal palpation, listening to bowel sounds, and checking for areas of tenderness or swelling.

Step 3

Diagnostic Planning

Based on your symptoms and examination, the doctor will recommend appropriate tests such as blood work, imaging studies, or procedures like endoscopy or colonoscopy.

Step 4

Treatment Discussion & Follow Up

Review of test results (if available), explanation of diagnosis, discussion of treatment options, and scheduling of follow-up appointments or procedures as needed.
